Introducing Robert P. Bates. He is one of the pioneers of the Unix computer operating systems. Mr. Bates first started working with computers when electronic switching of telephony appeared in the early 1970’s. He has participated in design of both hardware and software for over 40 years. Mr. Bates held many positions while working at C & P Telephone (now a part of Verizon) until his retirement in 1992. He designed and built Verizon’s data network for operations.. He also wrote a large database application that was widely deployed within C & P and was sold to other regional phone company’s.

Towards the end of Mr. Bates’s career at C & P he became involved in system standards, he sat on the standards body at Bellcore that wrote the spec for Unix 5.4.

Towards the end of his career at C & P he was put in charge Security for all desktop and Unix Systems in C & P. In this role Mr. Bates wrote the computer security policy for C & P. He was also responsible for intrusion detection and audits of all systems. He also deployed SecurID for access to critical elements of the network.

Upon retiring from C & P Mr. Bates setup a computer lab in his home. He has 8 different flavors of Unix available plus all form of Microsoft Windows/NT/2000/XP. Mr. Bates has been called upon to perform security evaluations and intrusion detection for many companies in the U.S. He also deployed SecurID for a number of companies.

Being one that likes to work on the cutting edge of technology Mr. Bates worked as contractor to temp agencies in the Washington Metro area before finding a job in Rockville MD (which is close to his home).

While working at Earthsat Mr. Bates was in charge of their computer security, while he continued to consult on computer security issues for other companies.

During his last two years at Earthsat Mr. Bates ran the computer evaluation-integration lab for Earthsat in his home. There he tested and evaluated all new software and hardware before it was deployed to production at Earthsat. Mr. Bates did the integration of Windows NT/2000 with Unix and Sun’s pcnetlink. Mr. Bates upgraded Earthsat’s network from a ten megabit to a 100-gigabit network.

Mr. Bates worked for ASRC on DEA’S WEB Upgrade Project. He received a security clearance (Confidental) to work on this project.

Mr. Bates enjoys working with others. He also enjoys passing on his extensive knowledge to his co-workers.
